What to Wear Under a Women’s Tuxedo
Last updated 14 October 2026
A white evening shirt is the most traditional layer under a women’s tuxedo. A blouse or camisole gives a softer evening look, while a waistcoat adds coverage and a three-piece effect. Choose the combination for your dress code, comfort and the way the jacket will be worn.
An evening shirt and bow tie
For a direct black-tie reference, start with a white evening shirt and black bow tie. Choose a collar that works comfortably with the tie. Check the shirt front and cuffs: studs are only needed for a shirt designed to take them, and cufflinks are used with double cuffs. Avoid buying accessories on the assumption that every evening shirt needs both.
The shirt should lie smoothly beneath the jacket without pulling at the bust or bunching at the waist. Try the bow tie with the collar fastened before deciding on its size.
A blouse
A simple blouse can soften the contrast between structured tailoring and the layer beneath it. Consider its neckline, sleeve volume and whether the fabric catches on the jacket lining. A large collar or bow can compete with a broad lapel; try the pieces together rather than judging them separately.
For a formal event, check opacity in daylight and bright indoor light. Make sure the blouse still gives the coverage you want when seated or when the jacket is open.
A camisole or simple top
A camisole gives a quieter neckline and a contemporary evening look. Test strap placement, opacity and neckline movement with the jacket both fastened and open. Keep in mind that you may want to take the jacket off later. The right layer should feel complete and comfortable on its own if that is part of your plan.
This is a different interpretation from a traditional shirt-and-bow-tie outfit. If the event has a strict dress code, check the host’s expectations.
Adding a waistcoat
A matching waistcoat creates another layer and can make the outfit feel finished when the jacket comes off. Try its neckline and armholes with the shirt or blouse you intend to wear. It should meet the top of the trousers without exposing an unwanted gap and should close without pulling.
Luxedo’s optional waistcoat is an addition to the suit order, with styling choices shown on the product form. The selector image illustrates the front. Read our waistcoat guide for fit and ordering details.
Can you wear a tuxedo jacket without a top?
It is an editorial styling choice, but it needs careful consideration of the jacket’s neckline and closure. It is not the simplest choice for a long event where you will sit, bend or dance. If coverage depends entirely on keeping the jacket in one position, a suitable layer underneath is usually more practical. Check the event’s dress code as well.
Try the complete outfit before the event
- Check neckline and coverage while standing and seated.
- Move your arms and make sure the underlayer does not pull or bunch.
- Check light-coloured and sheer fabrics in more than one light.
- Try the jacket open and closed, and decide whether you will remove it.
- Wear the intended shoes when checking trouser length.
Luxedo suit prices cover the jacket and trousers unless the product states otherwise. Shirts, tops, shoes and accessories in photographs are not automatically included; optional extras are listed separately.
