Double-Breasted Jacket Buttons: Arrangements Explained
Last updated 15 October 2026
A double-breasted jacket has an overlapping front with two columns of visible buttons. Labels such as 6×2 describe the visible button count and fastening layout, helping you compare the jacket’s balance and lapel line.
How to read 6×2, 4×2 and similar labels
The first number is the total number of visible front buttons. The second describes the fastening positions on the closing side. A 6×2 front has six visible buttons and two fastening positions; it does not mean six rows or that every visible button fastens. An internal supporting button is separate from this visible count.
Luxedo’s available double-breasted arrangements
On Made-to-Measure products, select Double breasted first, then choose the arrangement offered by the form. The current choices include:
| Arrangement | Visible buttons | Fastening positions |
|---|---|---|
| 2×1 | Two | One |
| 4×2 | Four | Two |
| 6×2 | Six | Two |
| 6×3 | Six | Three |
The product form is the reference for your order. The gallery’s six-button example illustrates the silhouette; it does not change to depict every button arrangement. Made-to-Order suits use a single-breasted front.
Other arrangements you may encounter
4×1 and 6×1 appear in tailoring more broadly. Their lower fastening can produce a longer lapel roll, depending on the cut. They are not additional Luxedo options simply because they appear in a general style guide. Ask us before ordering if the configuration you want is not listed.
Which should you choose?
A two-button front gives a simpler button pattern. Four- and six-button arrangements make more of the overlapping front. The overall effect also depends on button spacing, jacket length, lapel width and fit; a number alone cannot guarantee a particular body-shaping effect.
Peak lapels are an established companion to a double-breasted dinner jacket. Compare the examples and choose the shape and proportions you enjoy, rather than treating height or body shape as a restriction. Our lapel guide explains shape, width and satin placement.
Fastening and fit
Check that the overlap lies flat without pulling across the chest or waist. Use the fastening points intended for the chosen design and the internal supporting fastening where fitted. The fastening direction can differ between men’s and women’s jackets, so advice about a universal “bottom-right button” is not reliable.
A double-breasted jacket is generally worn fastened while standing. If you are unsure how a particular arrangement should close, ask Luxedo rather than forcing the front into a different roll.
